Server Purchasing Tips
February 9th, 2007
So it’s that time to upgrade or get your first dedicated server and all the numbers have you lost? No problem!
Opteron, Conroe, WoodCrest, 9xx series, 5xxx series all these numbers and odd names can be very confusing to even some of the “biggest geeks”
I’m going to make this short and sweet.
If you have the money for a high end server get a server wtih the woodcrest processor and 2gb of ram. If you want to step down get an opteron server if you want to step down again get a Pentium D.
To step “up” you can get a Dual Opteron and then one level above that is a Dual WoodCrest.
The new Cloverton (Quad Core) from Intel is only marginely faster than a Dual WoodCrest and cost a bunch more in terms of motherboard and processor.
A processor to keep an eye on is the new Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield. This processor is a four core unit and does NOT require any fancy smancy motherboard! This should yield for some pretty fast servers at a very affordable price.
This guide/info is VERY basic! Before deciding on a dedicated server we suggest researcing your options thoroughly.
