What is “Ruby On Rails”
Rails is a full-stack framework for developing database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern. From the Ajax in the view, to the request and response in the controller, to the domain model wrapping the database, Rails gives you a pure-Ruby development environment. To go live, all you need to add is a database and a web server. (RubyOnrails.org)
What it comes down to is Ruby On Rails is a relatively new programming language that speeds up the process for creating database driven web sites. Since the language is relatively new it’s been sometimes challening finding a web hosting provider that supports ruby on rails. Luckily there are a couple good ruby on rails hosting guide sites out there.
If you wish to setup you rown dedicated server to run ruby on rails it is suggested to be apache or lighttpd running fastcgi or scgi or even mongrel wors! As far as databases go many of the common ones work for Ruby on Rails such as, mysql, postgresql, sqlite sql server, firebird and even Oracle. Almost any operating system will work but a nix based system is HIGHLY recommended.
